Rangashree Varadarajan comes from a legacy of distinguished musicians. Rangashree is a disciple of Carnatic vocal music under Smt. Jayashree Varadarajan, Founder/Director of Sri Rama Lalitha Kala Mandir School of Fine Arts Sunnyvale, CA . Rangashree presented her solo vocal debut in 2001 at the prestigious Bangalore Gayana Samaja, India. Her presentation earned critical acclaim and admiration and she was deemed a promising young vocalist among the music community both in the US and India. In addition to several CD credits to her name, Rangashree presents both violin and vocal concerts around the US and India.
Rangashree received her early training in Carnatic violin, from Smt. Srimati Brahmanandam and Smt. Anuradha Sridhar, Founder/Director Trinity School of Music (Saratoga CA), and is undergoing advanced tutelage under Smt. Jayashree Varadarajan. Her violin debut was presented in 2004 at the Devagiri Sangeetha Sabha in Bangalore, India. Rangashree's fluidity and maturity in execution have made her a desirable violinist amongst the music community. In addition, Rangashree is an accomplished western violinist and jazz vocalist. She has performed at concert halls such as Carnegie Hall (New York, US), the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage (WDC, US),Nada Brahma Sangeeta Sabha (Mysore, India), and Gayana Samaja (Bangalore, India) just to name a few.
Rangashree is passionate about taking her musical abilities and knowledge into the community. In 2006, Rangashree spearheaded a team project through the Davis Honors Challenge, UC Davis, and developed an after school music education program for third grade students in and around the Sacramento, CA region. In addition, Rangashree has been actively involved in organizations such as Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPICMACAY) and the South Asian Performing Arts Network (SAPAN). In 2008, Rangashree incorporated her passions for music and science at Georgetown University, Lombardi Cancer Center where she initiated and conducted a research study in music and chemotherapy as its Principal Investigator.
As Rangashree’s interests in music are wide and varied, she often composes music for several instrument ensembles, mentors aspiring musicians, presents benefit concerts for various organizations, accompanies music, dance and operatic performances, and prepares numerous CDs of both classical and fusion music. Rangashree continues to educate her community about Carnatic and world music through fusion and jugalbandhis, workshops, presentations and active involvement in organizations like South Asian Performing Arts Network (Washington, DC). Rangashree also performs with several organizations and groups such as The Fourth Stream Band (Washington, DC), SolSource Group LLC (Washington, DC), Tranquil Space Yoga Studio (Washington, DC), Past Tense Yoga Studio (Washington, DC) and SubContinental Drift (Washington, DC).
Rangashree received her Master of Science degree from Georgetown University in Physiology and Biophysics with an emphasis in Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research. Currently, Rangashree is a scientific researcher at the Samueli Institute, Alexandria, VA in the department of Military Medical Research studying integrative and conventional medical treatments for stress and chronic pain. Her publication on omega-3 fatty acid supplement use can be found in the journal Prosteglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids in Spring 2010.
